7 Easy Steps to Properly Dispose of a Face Mask

“Fold, Roll, Dispose”

  1. Remove the face mask without touching the inside or outside of the mask.

  2. Fold or roll the mask, keeping the part that touched your body inside.

  3. Wrap the earloops around the mask.

  4. Put the mask in a separate bag from other types of waste and tie it tightly to prevent the spread of germs.

  5. Write clearly on the bag that it is infectious waste (used face mask).

  6. Dispose of the mask in a red infectious waste bin for proper disposal.
  7. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap or hand sanitizer after disposing of the face mask every time.

Additional tips:

  • Do not throw used face masks in the regular trash or recycling bin.

  • Do not flush used face masks down the toilet.

  • If you are sick, it is best to dispose of your face mask in a separate bag from other household waste.

  • If you are caring for someone who is sick, it is important to wear gloves and a face mask when handling their used face masks.
